The Sachse golf teams capped off the 2008 season with dinner and an awards presentation May 20 at Taste of Italy restaurant.

Coach Russell Simmons praised the boys’ and girls’ teams for their dedication and hard work.

Altogether, it was a solid spring for both squads. Both varsity teams placed fourth in their respective District 10-5A tournaments.

Other highlights included a championship trophy for the boys, which was earned in an early April tournament. The girls’ team picked up one second-place and two third-place trophies.

The season produced significant milestones for the girls’ program. With seven golfers, it was the first year Sachse has fielded a full five-member girls’ team in the district tournament. The team also advanced a female player to regional for the first time in school history.

Most Valuable Player honors went to Ryan Knighton and Kesney Nichols. Knighton, a four-year letterman, is the lone senior on either squad. He has signed with Hill Junior College in Hillsboro. The senior has been a No.1 or No. 2 player throughout his high school career.

“He has been a key to (our) success over the years,” Simmons said.

Nichols, a freshman, placed sixth at the district tournament with a two-day score of 191 and advanced to regionals.

Ryan Burrage and Jessica Parks, both freshmen, were honored as Newcomers of the Year.

“He got pushed a little, but responded to it and stayed on varsity all year,” Simmons said of Burrage.

Simmons praised Parks for working to improve her golf scores, while also being a member of the school’s cheerleading squad.

Most Improved recognition went to Brandon Knighton and Lindsey Briscoe. Simmons emphasized Knighton’s exceptional work ethic. Briscoe, a three-year letterman, was eighth at the district tourney.

Hunter Birdsong and Erin Polsfoot received the Scholarship Award for their stellar performances in the classroom. Simmons commended Birdsong for his ability to balance work with studies. Birdsong has a 4.36 GPA. Polsfoot has a 4.25 GPA.
