City board opening
City Secretary Terry Smith is accepting applications for the Planning & Zoning Commission.
This commission meets the second and fourth Monday of the month at City Hall to formulate plans, obtain information and make recommendations regarding zoning issues.
Applicants must be 18 years old, reside in the city and be registered voters. Anyone interested in volunteering to serve should complete an application and return it to Smith. The application maybe downloaded from the city Web site at www.cityofsachse.com.
Parking restrictions enforced
Sachse City Council recently approved a restricted parking ordinance between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the 4300 and 4400 blocks of Haverhill and Briarcrest Lanes and Hunters Ridge Drive on school days.
Residents can still have access to public street parking in front of their homes in the evenings, weekends and during the summers.
Signs have been posted throughout the neighborhood alerting everyone to the new restrictions. Offenders will be issued warning stickers at first, followed by citations.
Collin County
Remembering topic of free bereavement luncheon
Matt Wadsworth, a hospice social worker, will speak on “Remembering Well” at the Monday, May 19, bereavement luncheon hosted by the Visiting Nurse Association of Collin County.
The luncheon is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Grand Texan Seniors Community, 2491 Country View Ln. in McKinney.
The luncheon is free, but reservations are requested and can be made by calling VNA of Collin County at 214-733-5500.
Retro bowling event to raise funds for assistance center
A bobby-sox bowling event will benefit the Assistance Center of Collin County at the Plano Super Bowl from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 27.
In addition to bowling there will be a fajita buffet, music, costume contest, prizes and raffles. Corporate sponsorships are available. Lane sponsorships (team of four) are $300. An individual bowler can participate for $35.
The Assistance Center responds to people in crisis with housing, utilities, prescriptions, transportation, food and clothes. More than 17,000 people were helped in 2007.

Restland hosts 68th annual Memorial Day celebration
Restland Cemetery will host its 68th annual Memorial Day program at 1 p.m. May 26.
Former U.S. Air Force Captain Scott F. O’Grady will be the keynote speaker. This year’s celebration will pay special tribute to all World War II veterans.
The event is free.
Restland Cemetery is located at 9220 Restland Rd.
Disney’s ‘High School Musical’ coming to Dallas in July
Tickets are on sale now for the Dallas Summer Musicals’stage version of “High School Musical.”
The show runs July 2 through 13 at the Music Hall at Fair Park.

The annual Audie Murphy Day celebration will be held June 21 in the downtown Farmersville area.
The celebration honors Audie Leon Murphy, the most decorated American soldier of World War II, and local men and women who have served or are serving in the nation’s armed forces, organizers said.

Decatur-Maxwell clean-up day, tours planned
The Cemetery Association of Murphy will have a work day beginning at 9 a.m. May 24 at the Decatur-Maxwell Cemetery.
“Bring your sponges, soap, rags and garbage bags and help clean up the stones and premises,” said Brad Lapsley, association member.
From 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 30, the group will take part in a Memorial Day observance at the cemetery.
The fundraising event will include tours of the cemetery given by the Murphy Middle School Junior Historians, music by the Murphy Middle School Girls’ Choir and refreshments compliments of Albertson’s Grocery.
Access to the cemetery is from Tom Clevenger Road, weather permitting. Otherwise parking will be behind Murphy Middle School.

Chamber hosting networking lunch May 20
The Murphy Chamber of Commerce will host a networking luncheon at 11:30 a.m. May 20.
Those in attendance will be given a microphone and 30 seconds to promote their business, chamber officials said.

Fundraiser scheduled Sunday for cyclone victims
There will be a fundraiser for cyclone victims in Myanmar (Burma) at 6 p.m. May 18 at the Pacific Rim Restaurant, 3309 Dallas Pkwy. Ste. 401 in Plano.
Cost is $25 per person and includes food and entertainment donated by the local Thai community of Dallas.
Money raised will be donated to UNICEF to help victims in Burma.

The Richardson Regional Medical Center Foundation’s WildRide! Against Cancer is Saturday, May 17. The bike rally benefits the Lance Armstrong Shaped Beam Surgery program at Richardson Regional Cancer Center.
Cyclists choose from 16, 40 or 64 miles that start in Richardson and pass through Plano, Murphy, Wylie and Garland, across the dam at Lake Lavon and through Nevada and Josephine.
