Relief efforts continue for hurricane victims

By Congressman Pete Sessions

This week, Hurricane Sandy swept through our nation devastating several communities, leaving millions without power and taking more than 50 American lives. In times of destruction and despair, the American people have always come together to help our neighbors rebuild. Below I have highlighted a few options for those looking to help assist in disaster relief and recovery:

1. Blood donations: You can donate much-needed blood by scheduling a donation appointment in your area. For more information, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.

2. Food and shelter support: The Red Cross and the Salvation Army are providing emergency shelter and meals for evacuees. Visit their websites to find out how you can volunteer to help support.

3. Volunteer to clean up: Team Rubicon and Samaritan’s Purse are seeking teams to assist with rebuilding efforts.

4. Donate emergency supplies: Several organizations are providing food, medical supplies and other necessary items to people in need. Some of the organizations are: AmeriCares, Catholic Charities USA, Direct Relief International, Feeding America and Operation Blessing International.

5. Animal Care: Assist teams working to save the lives of animals displaced or suffering from the storm through the Humane Society of the United States and the American Humane Association.

Additionally, the House Veterans Affairs Commmittee has put together information for our nation’s veterans who have been affected by the storm. If you have friends or family that are veterans and in need of assistance, visit veterans.house.gov/HurricaneSandy for resources available to them.

I am confident that the strength and resilience of the American people will continue to shine through these difficult times, as it has so many times before. My thoughts and prayers will continue to be with all of those affected by the storm and I extend my deepest gratitude to the first responders, local officials and volunteers.
